Mary Shelley y el Fénix: razones y espíritu de la «Literary Life» de Lope de Vega (1837)

En 1837, la escritora inglesa Mary Shelley publicó una biografía de Lope de Vega en el contexto de las Lives of the Most Eminent Literary and Scientific Men of Italy, Spain and Portugal. Este artículo analiza esa biografía con el fin de dilucidar la imagen del Fénix que tenía la autora y las razones por las que la construyó así. Para ello, comenzaremos contextualizando la biografía lopesca en el marco de las Literary Lives y explicando la construcción general de la obra, que se basa en el modelo plutarquiano de las vidas paralelas. A continuación, analizaremos el texto teniendo presente ese esquema clásico, contrastando las características que Mary vio en Lope con las que dominan la biografía inmediatamente anterior, la de Cervantes, con la que la autora estableció comparaciones explícitas. Examinándolas, resaltaremos cómo Mary sintió hacia el Fénix sentimientos ambiguos e incluso contradictorios que podemos adscribir a la ideología liberal y a la estética romántica de la autora, amén de a la poderosa influencia de los prejuicios anticatólicos en la Inglaterra de la época.

Abstract:

In 1837, the English writer Mary Shelley published a biography of Lope de Vega in the context of her Lives of the Most Eminent Literary and Scientific Men of Italy, Spain and Portugal. This article analyzes that biography in order to examine the image of Lope that Mary had and the reasons behind it. In order to achieve this goal, we will begin by contextualizing the biography in the frame of the Literary Lives and by explaining how they were constructed following the model of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives. Then, we will analyze Lope’s biography with that classical model in mind and contrasting the traits that Mary saw in Lope’s character with those she emphasized in the previous biography, that of Cervantes, which Mary explicitly compared to Lope’s. Examining them, we will underline how Mary had ambiguous and even contradictory feelings towards Lope, due to her liberal ideology, her Romantic aesthetics, and the powerful influence of anti-Catholic prejudices typical of the England of the time.
